Chapter 10

Building Trust and

Better Relationships

Through Excellent

Communication

“There’s a big difference between listening and waiting for the other person to stop talking.”

—Barry Habib

Communication is the Lifeblood of Everything

Much of the world’s problems could be solved—or even better, avoided—with clearer communication. Look at the most successful people you know. Look at the best relationships you can point to. I’ll bet a key to their success, and a common thread for their strength is excellent communication.

We must improve and refine our communication skills constantly. Your message needs to be clear, smooth, and articulate. I cannot stress enough the importance of what you just read. Sharpen your communication, and the world will reward you with more than you’ve ever dreamed.

One effective way to sharpen your communication skills is to get feedback on your messaging from the most novice of individuals because if they can understand your message, almost anyone can. Sure, it’s fine to get feedback from experienced and reputable sources, but perhaps the most value will come from the feedback of novices. Here’s the thing: you must try to forget your own expertise. The common terms, abbreviations, acronyms, and initials that you throw around, which come from your experience and familiarity, need to be discarded immediately if you are to be an effective communicator. I always use the phrase “spoon-feed your message” and recommend that you leave nothing to ambiguity.

I’ve had experience as an actor and film producer, and one thing I admire about some of the best content in film and entertainment is the writer’s ability to give the audience a clear message that they can follow. The best authors spoon-feed the message to set up the viewer, listener, or reader for the payoff. That payoff can be in the form of a laugh, a cry, or the realization of an idea. It’s much more difficult to follow along when you’re constantly guessing. That may be okay for a murder-mystery movie, but it just doesn’t work when you’re trying to express your ideas to someone else in business or in a relationship.

Communication is so underrated and so misunderstood, yet it’s perhaps the most important exchange between people that can happen.

So what is successful communication? It’s taking an idea that resides within your brain and transferring it to another person’s brain while making sure that they understand it. This is even more important when you’re trying to reach a group of people or a larger audience. Great communicators understand how to do this. They know their ideas did not just pop into their brains. It took a path of formulation. A very common mistake is for one person to try to insert an idea into someone else’s brain without the benefit of helping them understand how that formulation took place.

The recipient of an idea that is not effectively communicated may not understand it. Additionally, they may be hesitant to admit their confusion because of their pride or potential embarrassment. So they politely nod their head as if they had understood and come away with nothing.
